Missing out

One of the things you might not think about with a stem cell transplant is all you have to miss out on socially.

Whether it be because you are not well that day, appointments, or that the place will be too busy for your weak immune system. You will inevitably miss out sometimes. This can be hard, you feel like life is passing you by while you are stuck in a sort of suspense waiting for the next steps of getting well.

Reducing immunosuppressants, less fatigue and pain, getting those all important immunisations.

You know from the start that it is going to be a very long journey and there will be times when its 2 steps forward and what feels like 5 backwards. You have to take pleasure in the days when you do feel like doing something even if its just a bit of shopping or seeing a friend for a brew, knowing that the end goal is to get well and be able to do all the things you want to again plus some new things I hope :)

Getting people to understand this is also a difficult thing, unless you have been through it or are close to someone going through it, it is completely alien. Trying to understand not being able to socially interact as normal for instance avoiding busy places, avoiding children, avoiding anyone who's got a sniffle and the feeling different from day to day illness wise.

I am sure it is disappointing for friends and family when they cant see you but remember it is not forever, once I am well am sure everyone will be sick of seeing me so much haha!
